Fish Out of Water

Alright, my last post was a big failure. I'll admit it. Which is why my new post is called fish out of water. Fish swim. There is a reason why they don't have feet. Here's my reasoning: if fish had feet, they'd also be able to breathe above water. But, since they don't, they sort of roll around and flip over.

Flopping.

See the connection?
I'm most likely using the term wrong, so forgive me.

Title: Hoe Couture

Photographer: James Waddell

I love this picture. It's so bright and colorful. A lot of editorials these days focus on creepy colors and using strange shadows to highlight a sense of mystery. It is rather refreshing to see an editorial that is lively, but one that is also called "Hoe Couture."

You might see a hoe in this picture (is that how you really spell hoe?) and I see one too. I just think that it's so incredible how the stylist and photographer and everyone managed to make a hoe look just a bit innocent.

New Waves

What I've noticed recently is that there is a new wave of people absolutely and insanely obsessed with the so talented Michael Phelps. Right. So it only makes sense that the reason why he's all of a sudden become such a phenomenon (as in, he's wildly popular now compared to a year ago) is because of the Olympics. I'll admit, I sit in front of the TV waiting to see him (who doesn't?).

But, I like to think I'm a little bit different. I've been absolutely in love with him since the 2004 Olympics in Athens. However, when something isn't so much in the public eye, people tend to forget about him (or her), which, (shamefully) is sort of what I did.

I don't know who the photographer is and I'm really horrible at distinguishing models from one another, so if anyone can help me on this, I would be rather appreciative.

Alright, I don't think I really need to explain my whole reasoning for picking this picture. Not only is it the right time to show this picture, but as most of you know, Michael Phelps recently won more gold medals than anyone else in history (is it history or swimming history?).

Also, he's incredibly good looking in this picture.

Zero Day(s)

The Olympics begin tomorrow. I'm extremely excited and I really cannot wait.

When I was seven years old, I took a martial arts class. The instructor or head (I seriously don't really remember who he is...) said that in 2008, they would be flying to China to perform at the Olympics. I remember how excited everyone was, but now, looking back, I don't ever think he really meant it. It really does not make much sense.

So, specifically, what will I be paying attention to? Definitely volleyball (since I play that sport), and swimming (since I also swim...), and gymnastics (since I just love watching that. It's always so fluid and beautiful whereas other sports- besides ice skating- is more about power and speed).

Issue: 2008

Model: Sasha Pivovarova

This picture is thrilling. Maybe not in an obvious "let's go on a roller coaster" way, but they look so carefree and happy and as if nothing would matter... even if some rabid squirrel were to come in and try to bite off a toe. After all, they are wearing closed-toe shoes. Alright, that wasn't funny.

I also love the styling in this picture. It's so absurd to ever think that anyone would wear a thick fur coat (which I am strongly against) in the dead heat of the summer. It looks like it's summer. The trees in the background still have their leaves (unless those trees don't shed? Is that the word?). I love how the stylist mixed such wintry items with such summery accessories (the hat).

update:
I was watching the opening ceremony, and it really blew me away. It was really quite fantastic, but I'm sure you all know that from watching it. But I have a question, if you were paying attention during the parade of the countries (or whatever that's called), they introduced this one guy from a country in Africa (I think. It might have been an island country) who learned how to swim nine months before the Olympics in Athens. He couldn't finish the 100 meter, so the audience cheered him on. Do you guys know what his name is? Or what country he's from? I'm trying to find out.

Three Things To Rave About

I love finding cute little trinkets and stationary and accessories and fashion pieces really, just anything that catches my fancy. So I rounded up a few of my favorites things (Sound of Music) that I've found while aimlessly browsing the internet: probably because I have too much time on my hands...

1.

I've always been in love with illustrations like these. I'm not sure what you'd call them? But the idea of placing the illustrations in front of a map of Paris is ingenious (which I always thought meant not genius...) Found them on etsy by StoriesDivinations.

2.

Fredflare always has the most fascinating little accessories, and, in this case, they didn't fail to amuse me. From past posts, I think I've stressed on the fact that I love reading good literature and really, who doesn't? I think it's something that you've got to learn to love and I've had my fair share of learning. And what author and poet can create such haunting stories other than Edgar Allan Poe?

3.

On a recent trip to Vietnam, my friend purchased two rolls of tape that featured little zoo animals and little flying pigs, respectively. They were the cutest little things on earth. So, when I found this little roll of tape on fredflare, I immediately fell in love. I'd love to see little dancing children whenever I tape something together...

Lucy and Jude

To all: I'm sorry about my lack of posts during the last week. I've been rather busy and haven't had time to update. Okay, that's a lie, I was being lazy. I did make one post, but it was pretty horrible, so I ended up deleting it.

Anyhoo, moving on to the picture of the day:
Magazine: Jalouse
Issue: December 2002/January 2003
Photographer: Paf! Le Chien
Model: Heather Marks

This editorial is called Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (The Beatles) which just happens to be one of my favorite songs. I'm not sure if you can see the image or not, so if you need to, just click on the picture and it'll redirect you to a bigger one.

I absolutely love both images, what with the double image thing blended to form one. I'm not sure what you'd call that? Dual? But it's absolutely stunning. The styling was so effortless and simple, not too modern, not too outdated. These pictures are classic.

I couldn't have picked a better title for this editorial.

Us

This video matches her voice so perfectly, it really is amazing. Oh how I wish real life could be as interesting and haunting. I'm not even sure how this video is creepy, but it definitely is. Maybe it's the jerky movements or the mysterious moving objects but either way, the song and video are "contagious."

Oh, and I want that suit she's wearing. The detailing on it is so fascinating.

Enjoy watching it.
Song: Us
Artist: Regina Spektor

Update:
Lately I've really been looking into Willa Holland's style (April) in Garden Party and I'm definitely falling in love with it. It's so simple with nothing over the top and everything is so easy to mix and match with. There are some bold statement pieces that make everything fall into place and seem so quirky and magnificent. Take a look:

All the World's a Stage

All the world's a stage.

What many people do not know (and what I did not know until very recently), was that this poem supposedly bringing so many people inspiration, is about death. Well, according to my English teacher that is. But I seriously doubt his wisdom, he seems to be wrong a lot.

But it makes sense. The whole poem is building up to a single climax where, in the end, we all die. A nice thought to think about in the middle of summer, no? Okay, so, you may be wondering why I want to bring up this poem and here is why: I used to hate this poem.

If you've ever watched Kenneth Branagh's version of As You Like It, you may understand what I mean. When Jacques (Jake-es? Jacque-ui? Let's ponder over this for a while...) so eloquently reads this poem, it took nearly ten minutes. The sun could have set and risen again in that amount of time. I'm sure that good actors will take their time, but by the end, I was really getting very impatient.

But that was just the movie. When I actually read As You Like It, "All the World's a Stage" and the "Epilogue" was about as much of the play that I liked. So why did I suddenly like this tenminutelongforJacquestoreaditaloud poem? Well, maybe it was the idea that Shakespeare wrote it, or maybe it was the fact that it didn't take ten minutes to read.

My dear bloggers, today, find a poem you thought you always hated and read it again. Try to find the beauty in it, maybe you will.

Last time I used a rather dark photographer and I was just about to use another one with that same tone when I stumbled across this bright little picture. I am guessing that this flower is a lotus? But, me being unschooled in the world of flowers, I am not sure at all.

I think that the reason why I chose this picture is very self-explanatory. It's beautiful and simplistic. Just seeing that one flower rising out of the water with dozens of lily pads (lilypads?) floating around it makes me wonder at how this little flower can be so inspirational. But it is. And it doesn't hurt that this one picture has beautiful lighting.
